Senior nursing students (n=76) were asked to complete a self-reporting questionnaire after clinical practice (response rate 79%). Ordered by causal importance the stressor categories were, first, insufficient nursing ability (with sub-categories of knowledge and skill followed by understanding the patient state); second, hospital and university teaching staff; and, of lower causal importance, third, patients' family and associates; and fourth, students in the same group. The most effective coping strategies for insufficient nursing ability and hospital and university teaching stressors were independent and dependent problem-solving. Particularly effective with the sub-stressors of knowledge and skill were self-study and advice. The strategies for coping with stress in personal relations - students in same group and patients' associates - were dispersed problem-solving (dependent rather than independent) and problem-escaping (self-loving rather than discharging), particularly mutual advice and resting activities.
