Examining this process is essential for studying Japanese culture. Especially from a language contact perspective, the transformation of kanji reflects characteristics of cultural change, and its readings （phonetic complements） are important for Japanese cultural research.\n　In this study, we focus on the character 鬼 （oni）, which is significant in Japanese culture, and examine its structure and the image it represents. Moreover, we trace the pronunciations of oni in ancient literature and compare the meanings contained in each pronunciation.
