His view of the child included his great trust in the moral possibility of the individual. On the other hand, Alcott accepted the existence of “the common conscience” as a form of conformity limiting personal moral judgment in a group. This concept of “common conscience” is a key concept in his theories of moral education and school management, as well as his other ideas from the 1820s and 1830s. The “approval” of “sympathy” that is a key term in Alcott’ s concept of “common conscience” is shared with the Scottish school of moral philosophy, especially that of Adam Smith, in the 18th century.
