Using a self-administered questionnaire, a cross-sectional study was conducted on psychiatric clinical nursing practicums by targeting nurses from hospitals with or without nursing practicums. Results from this study showed that nurses from hospitals with practicums scored significantly higher on six subscale items, pertaining to “nursing competence,”“mindfulness,” and “the role played by nurses” in occupational stress. Multiple regression analysis revealed that stress from “interpersonal relationships with patients” had a significant negative influence on each of the nursing competence areas, as well as “mindfulness,” suggesting that psychiatric nursing can lead to emotional instability following interactions with patients.
