| 内容記述 | 本稿は、19世紀の20年代から30年代のニューイングランドにおいて、アメリカ進歩主義教育の先駆と目される教育実践を行ったブロンソン・オルコットに関わる論考である。 オルコットの教育実践では道徳教育が重視され、その際、子どもによる道徳的判断が彼に内在する良心機能に求められていた。ピューリタニズムの影響が根強く残る19世紀初頭にあって、子どもの内に良心の働きを認めるオルコットの児童理解は、個人としての子どもの道徳的可能性に対する絶大なる信頼が含まれていた。他方で、個人としての子どもの道徳的判断の準拠枠として学級集団の中に「共通の良心」の存在をオルコットは認めていた。この「共通の良心」概念は、とりわけ1820年代、30年代における彼の道徳教育論および学校経営論の鍵概念となっている。こうしたオルコットの個人の良心と「共通の良心」とのダイナミックな関係によって展開される道徳教育論のキータームである「共感」「是認」は、18世紀にスコットランド道徳哲学の思想家たち、殊にアダム・スミスによっても共有されていたタームである。 こうしたことを踏まえ、本稿では、オルコットの教育思想を18世紀から19世紀にかけてのヨーロッパ思想史の潮流との関連で捉える作業として、彼の「共通の良心」概念の着想がアダム・スミスの「道徳感情論」から受けた影響について論考を試みた。 This article concerns educator Bronson Alcott in his aspect as a pioneer of progressive education in America.Alcott emphasized the importance of moral education in his educational practice, and he respected the moral judgment of the conscience of children. His view of the child included his great trust in the moral possibility of the individual. On the other hand, Alcott accepted the existence of “the common conscience” as a form of conformity limiting personal moral judgment in a group. This concept of “common conscience” is a key concept in his theories of moral education and school management, as well as his other ideas from the 1820s and 1830s. The “approval” of “sympathy” that is a key term in Alcott’ s concept of “common conscience” is shared with the Scottish school of moral philosophy, especially that of Adam Smith, in the 18th century. This article studies the influence of Adam Smith’ s theory of “moral sentiments” on Alcott’ s concept of the “common conscience,” and aims to connect the educational hought of Alcott with the history of European thought in the 18th and 19th centuries. |
